International Mindedness

Some suggestions for what you could do in your classrooms to promote International Mindedness and ensure that all students are settling in, feeling valued and feeling recognised as individuals within our community, in addition to promoting the Learner Profile.

  • All nationalities in your class represented in a display.
  • Invite parents as guest speakers - readers in mother tongue
    - guest to share anything about their culture
  • Invite older students as guest speakers
  • Homework – mother tongue. Use as an opportunity for students to share their home culture with their peers.
  • Multi-lingual labelling.
  • Greetings in different languages.
  • Know your neighbours – ASEAN country activities.
  • Games from around the world – as a whole school, as a grade, as part of a House Day.
  • Other aspects of culture could be displayed or shared by students - food, national dress, music, art.
Let us know if you want to run with any of these as part of your class, or UOI. This could lead to some partnerships across grades through your shared interests.

Intl. MIndedness Committee Meeting: Tuesday September 2, 2014
Present:

Discussion:
- During Mentor meeting, new staff and John discussed ways the Learner Profile can be incorporated into the daily lives of the students. We are fortunate that all the new teaching staff this year have experience teaching the PYP. They bring with them many ideas, practices and experiences from a range of places around the world.
- Below is a list of ideas we discussed for ways to use Learner Profile Week to initiate practices that may continue throughout the year. These relate mainly to displays, but there are some other suggestions also_
  • Dragon's head – each time a student displays one of the LP attributes, a scale is added to the dragon's body so that as the year progresses the dragon gets bigger.
  • Similar ideas for sunflowers with leaves or trees with leaves that are added with students' names and LP traits.
  • Star chart (weekly) with student names and LP attributes.
  • Add photos of the students to LP posters. Include speech bubbles also.
  • Learner profile action wall with photos of children in action.
  • Posters made by the children.

Other ideas:
  • Friend detectives
  • Stickers, pins and badges.
  • LP song – Nicholas can teach you
  • Awards for displaying IBLP traits.
